ABB is strengthening its commitment to innovation and localization in China, as the convergence of artificial intelligence (AI) and industrial automation reshapes the manufacturing landscape.
Speaking during the 21st ABB Cup Intelligent Technology Innovation Competition, Kang Liang, President of ABB (China) Ltd., highlighted that innovation remains central to ABB’s strategy in China—its second-largest global market. The company continues to advance its “In China, for China” approach, expanding capabilities across manufacturing, sales, services, and R&D.
According to ABB, more than 85% of its revenue in China is generated from locally manufactured products and solutions, reflecting a high degree of localization and alignment with domestic market demand.
The annual ABB Cup competition has increasingly become a platform for bridging advanced technologies with industrial applications. This year’s challenges focus on AI-driven warehouse optimization and the deployment of lightweight speech models in industrial environments—two areas seen as critical for improving operational efficiency and enabling smarter manufacturing systems.
Industry observers note that such initiatives not only accelerate the commercialization of AI technologies but also help cultivate a new generation of engineering talent capable of translating algorithms into real-world industrial solutions.
ABB is also advancing AI applications in energy management and sustainable manufacturing. At its Xiamen industrial hub, a large-scale rooftop photovoltaic installation supplies approximately 50% of the facility’s electricity demand. In parallel, AI-based forecasting tools for power generation and load management are enabling more precise and flexible energy optimization, contributing to significant annual carbon emissions reductions.
China’s upcoming “15th Five-Year Plan” is expected to prioritize the development of a modern industrial system and the acceleration of green transition. Against this backdrop, electrification, automation, and digitalization technologies are anticipated to play a pivotal role—areas where ABB maintains strong technical expertise.
In addition to technology deployment, ABB is deepening collaboration with Chinese universities and research institutions. Through joint laboratories, co-developed curricula, and industry-academia partnerships, the company aims to address the growing demand for highly skilled technical talent.
Looking ahead, ABB plans to continue working with partners across industry and academia to foster innovation and support China’s transition toward high-quality, sustainable economic growth.
