Honeywell in China: Local R&D Powers Global Innovation Across All Business Groups

Time:2026-04-20 Browse: 1

From its first Shanghai office in 1935 to a fully integrated presence across the country today, Honeywell has cultivated a nearly century-long relationship with China. Over 90 years, the company has deeply embedded its growth trajectory into China’s economic development, establishing a complete localized value chain encompassing innovation, R&D, manufacturing, procurement, sales, and service.

“All of Honeywell’s business groups are now based in China, with Shanghai serving as our China headquarters,” said Chen Yan, Vice President of Honeywell Building Technologies and General Manager of Greater China. “We have built a fully localized value chain covering every stage of product and solution development.”

“Oriental Service for the Orient” Strategy

Yu Feng, President of Honeywell Greater China, elaborated on the company’s strategic direction: “Our ‘Oriental Service for the Orient’ approach is not traditional localization. Instead of simply adapting foreign products for China, our local teams lead design, procurement, and production based on Chinese market needs and customer pain points. These locally developed solutions comply with Chinese standards while delivering global-quality performance.”

Honeywell’s localized innovation spans multiple sectors. At the 8th China International Import Expo, the company introduced eight new products tailored to Chinese market needs, covering semiconductors, industrial combustion, industrial automation, smart buildings, and battery safety. In smart buildings, Honeywell collaborated with St. Regis Lhasa, Zhongji United, Shanghai Zhangjiang Group, and local universities and property companies, designing customized low-carbon smart building solutions for high-altitude regions like Lhasa.

The impact of this strategy is tangible. Honeywell has established R&D centers in Beijing, Shanghai, Xi’an, and Tianjin, and manufacturing facilities in Xi’an, Tianjin, and Guangzhou. More than 50% of products sold in China are fully developed and manufactured locally, demonstrating the scale and depth of local innovation.

Local Innovations Going Global

Significantly, many innovations originating in China are now being exported globally. “For instance, our barcode scanners and printers developed in Suzhou serve as a core global R&D hub,” Yu Feng noted. “Leveraging China’s engineering talent and resilient supply chains, we develop and produce locally to serve China—and the world.”

In the new energy vehicle sector, with over 60% of global EV production occurring in China, Honeywell’s locally developed solutions are increasingly integrated into global supply chains and recommended to leading automotive brands worldwide.

Honeywell also promotes two-way knowledge exchange. Employees travel globally to share China’s innovation capabilities, while international colleagues visit China to witness the country’s industrial and technological ecosystem firsthand. In smart buildings, China-developed platforms such as the Building Performance Suite (BPS) are now deployed in regions including the Middle East, improving operational efficiency, energy savings, and sustainability.

Future Outlook

Looking ahead, Chen Yan emphasized that China’s smart building sector will evolve around green low-carbon solutions, digitalization, and full lifecycle value optimization. Honeywell will continue to deliver products and technologies tailored to Chinese customers, leveraging global experience and local innovation to support industrial upgrades and promote low-carbon, efficient, safe, and sustainable development.

Yu Feng reaffirmed Honeywell’s commitment to the “Oriental Service for the Orient” strategy, underlining the company’s long-term dedication to China and its role in bridging local innovation with global markets.
