ABB has been awarded the “Outstanding Equipment Supplier” honor by BASF for its Zhanjiang Verbund Site, coinciding with the project’s official announcement of full operation on March 26, 2026. As a core automation partner, ABB’s recognition highlights its technical expertise, service excellence, and the long-standing, mutually beneficial partnership between the two companies.

The BASF Zhanjiang Verbund Site represents BASF’s largest single investment globally to date and stands as one of China’s most advanced and large-scale integrated chemical complexes. Fan Xiaopeng, Vice President of Energy Industries, China at ABB, attended the ceremony and accepted the award, emphasizing its significance for ABB and the entire project team. The recognition underscores ABB’s capability in delivering integrated automation and digital solutions to support both project construction and long-term operational goals, as well as the industry’s trust in ABB’s contributions to advancing automation in the chemical sector.
As the Main Automation Vendor/Contractor (MAV/MAC), ABB was deeply involved throughout the full lifecycle of the project. Through reliable solution delivery, efficient multi-party collaboration, and comprehensive service support, ABB has helped establish a solid foundation for the site’s safe, efficient, and sustainable operations—supporting BASF in building long-term competitive advantages.

At the site, ABB deployed its ABB Ability™ System 800xA® distributed control system (DCS), enabling centralized management of 22 production units. The project also marks the first large-scale application of Ethernet-APL technology in a complex industrial environment. This advanced data communication approach simplifies management processes, significantly reduces overall operation and maintenance costs, and enhances both operational efficiency and system reliability. ABB also worked closely with more than 15 engineering, procurement, and construction (EP/EPC) partners to ensure seamless coordination and successful project execution.
In addition, ABB and BASF have jointly advanced a value co-creation model focused on digital transformation in high-end chemical parks. ABB delivered a suite of customized digital solutions, including Manufacturing Execution Systems (MES), Alarm Management Systems (AMS), and Operator Training Simulators (OTS). These systems convert production data into actionable insights, enabling refined process control and intelligent scheduling across the entire production chain. Through the integration of these solutions, ABB is supporting BASF’s transition toward a future-ready autonomous smart factory.
“Receiving BASF’s ‘Outstanding Equipment Supplier’ award is both a recognition and a motivation for us to continue moving forward,” said Fan Xiaopeng. “ABB remains customer-centric, leveraging advanced technologies to deliver reliable automation and digital solutions that help customers build robust intelligent operation systems and lay a solid foundation for autonomous operations. Looking ahead, we will continue to enhance our technologies and services, supported by our professional teams and full lifecycle service capabilities, to deliver greater value to our customers.”
ABB remains committed to driving innovation in China’s chemical industry. By harnessing advanced automation and digital technologies, the company aims to empower leading enterprises like BASF—and the broader chemical sector—to confidently navigate future challenges and opportunities. This award not only recognizes past achievements but also reinforces ABB’s commitment to advancing a more efficient, intelligent, and sustainable industrial landscape.
